This is the question families ask most, and it matters, because the answer determines exactly what kind of support your loved one needs.
Companion care is non-medical, hands-off support. A companion caregiver provides conversation, emotional support, household help, meal preparation, transportation, errands, and verbal medication reminders. They engage with your loved one as a consistent, caring presence in the home, without hands-on physical assistance.
Personal care includes everything companion care does, and adds hands-on physical support: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility assistance. It is the right choice when a loved one needs physical help with daily routines in addition to companionship and household support.
No Place Like Home Care provides both. During your free in-home assessment, our nurse-led team will evaluate your loved one's actual daily needs and recommend the right level of care, honestly, without upselling.

Most families think of companion care as a quality-of-life service. The research tells a different story.
Severe social isolation in seniors increases the risk of developing dementia by 50%. It increases stroke risk by 32%. It suppresses immune function, accelerates cognitive decline, and is now recognized by major health institutions as a clinical risk factor, not simply a social one.
When a loved one stops answering phone calls, drops out of activities they used to enjoy, sleeps excessively during the day, or sits alone for hours without meaningful interaction, what you're watching is not simply loneliness. It is a health situation that deserves a real response.
Companion care is that response. A consistent, trained caregiver who shows up, engages, prepares a meal, and simply stays, changes that picture meaningfully. Not because of any clinical intervention, but because human connection is itself protective.
No Place Like Home Care matches each client with a caregiver whose personality, communication style, and interests align with theirs. Because the best companion care isn't just presence, it's the right presence.
Every companion caregiver at No Place Like Home Care is trained, background-checked, and matched to your loved one before their first visit. Here is what they provide on every scheduled shift.
Meaningful Conversation & Engagement
Board games, card games, crafts, music, reading aloud, storytelling, and the kind of genuine daily conversation that keeps minds active and spirits steady.
Meal Preparation
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner tailored to dietary preferences and physician-recommended guidelines. Grocery list management, kitchen cleanup, and hydration support throughout the day.
Light Housekeeping
Dishes, laundry, vacuuming, dusting, and home organization, keeping the living environment clean, comfortable, and safe without the client having to manage it alone.
Transportation & Errands
Driving to medical appointments, pharmacy pickups, grocery shopping, haircuts, bank visits, and community outings. Mileage billed at the current IRS standard rate.
Medication Reminders
Verbal and visual reminders to take medications as prescribed, at the right time. No Place Like Home Care caregivers provide reminders only, never administration or handling of medications.
Dementia-Friendly Interaction
Calm, consistent, dementia-adapted engagement for clients with cognitive changes, structured routines, gentle redirection, and communication approaches that reduce anxiety and support dignity.
Safety Awareness
A trained, observant presence that notices changes in daily behavior, alerts family when something seems different, and provides the kind of continuous, non-clinical oversight that keeps families informed and loved ones safer at home.
Companion care is the right starting point for seniors and adults who are managing their personal hygiene and mobility independently, but who need support with the daily routines, household tasks, and social engagement that make home feel livable, not just survivable.
The Parent Who Lives Alone
Your parent manages their own daily care but spends long stretches of the day alone, isn't eating well, and has stopped doing the things they used to enjoy. Companion care provides consistent daily presence, meals, household support, and the engagement that reverses isolation.
The Senior with Early Memory Changes
Your loved one has mild cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia and still lives at home, but needs structured routine, gentle redirection, and a caregiver who understands how to engage without creating anxiety. No Place Like Home Care companions are trained in dementia-friendly interaction.
The Family Caregiver Who Needs a Break
You provide the personal care. You handle the appointments. But you cannot be there every hour of every day. Companion care fills the gaps, giving your loved one supervision and engagement while you work, rest, or attend to your own needs.
Companion care at No Place Like Home Care is designed to flex with your loved one's needs over time.
Many families start with a few scheduled visits per week, a morning companion for breakfast and a walk, or an afternoon visit during the hours a parent is most at risk for isolation. As needs grow, hours scale up seamlessly. There is no need to change agencies or restart the relationship.
We require a 4-hour minimum per visit and a 16-hour weekly minimum commitment. Within those parameters, scheduling is built around your loved one's routine, not ours.
If companion care needs evolve into personal care, live-in care, or more intensive support, the same nurse-led team that began the relationship manages that transition. Continuity of care, from the first visit to whatever comes next.
No Place Like Home Care publishes its rates clearly because families making decisions about companion care deserve to plan with real numbers.

Finding a companion caregiver through a classified listing or personal referral may feel simpler at first. But independent hiring transfers significant responsibility to the family, and most families don't realize that until something goes wrong.
When you hire a caregiver independently, you become their employer. You are responsible for payroll tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare taxes, federal unemployment taxes, and Form W-2 issuance at year end. You carry liability if the caregiver is injured in your home. And if your regular caregiver calls out sick, finding coverage is entirely your problem.
With No Place Like Home Care, every one of those responsibilities belongs to us. We handle background screening, drug and TB testing, training, payroll, worker's compensation insurance, and backup coverage when the regular caregiver is unavailable. You receive a matched, trained, insured companion, and the peace of mind that comes with a professionally managed agency relationship.
Our nurse-led matching process goes one step further: Kelly Tyrrell, RN personally reviews every care plan and caregiver placement to ensure the right fit, not just availability.
Companion care is non-medical, hands-off support, conversation, emotional engagement, household help, meal preparation, transportation, and verbal medication reminders. Personal care includes everything companion care provides, plus hands-on physical assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility transfers. No Place Like Home Care provides both, and our nurse-led in-home assessment helps families determine which level of support is genuinely needed.
A companion caregiver manages the social and household tasks that allow a senior to live comfortably and safely at home. This includes meaningful conversation and activities, meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, driving to appointments and errands, verbal medication reminders, and dementia-friendly social engagement. All tasks are non-medical and hands-off, no bathing, dressing, or physical transfers.
The most significant benefit is addressing dangerous social isolation. Research shows that severe loneliness in seniors increases the risk of developing dementia by 50% and stroke risk by 32%. Beyond the health research, companion care ensures meals are being prepared, the home is being maintained, and a trained observer is present to notice changes in behavior or health that family members might miss. For many seniors, companion care is what makes aging at home genuinely sustainable.
No Place Like Home Care companion care rates begin at $34 per hour for weekday day shifts, $36 per hour for evening, night, and weekend day shifts, and $38 per hour for weekend evening, night, and holiday shifts. A 4-hour minimum per visit and 16-hour weekly minimum apply. A one-time care coordination and onboarding fee of $375 also applies. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance.
Yes, most modern long-term care insurance policies cover companion care when services are provided through a licensed home care agency. No Place Like Home Care accepts LTCI and can provide the documentation your insurance company requires for reimbursement. To trigger policy benefits, the policyholder typically needs to demonstrate a need for assistance with at least two activities of daily living or supervision due to cognitive decline. We recommend contacting your insurance provider with your policy number to confirm your specific benefit terms.
No. Companion caregivers, including No Place Like Home Care's, cannot legally handle, pour, or administer medications. State law restricts medication administration to licensed nurses or certified medication technicians. No Place Like Home Care companion caregivers provide verbal and visual reminders, can bring a pre-filled glass of water, and can help open child-proof caps, but the client takes their own medication independently.
No. Traditional Medicare does not cover companion care because it is classified as non-medical custodial care. Medicare strictly funds medically necessary services such as short-term skilled nursing or physical therapy. No Place Like Home Care is private pay and long-term care insurance funded. Families should contact their long-term care insurance provider to confirm companion care benefit eligibility under their specific policy.
No Place Like Home Care companion care starts at a 16-hour weekly minimum and can scale up to continuous daily coverage. Many families begin with two or three scheduled visits per week and increase hours as needs grow. The same caregiver relationship continues as hours scale, there is no need to restart with a new caregiver when more support is needed.
Hiring a companion independently may appear more affordable initially, but families who hire privately become the caregiver's legal employer, responsible for payroll taxes, Social Security and Medicare withholding, federal unemployment taxes, and Form W-2 issuance. They also carry liability if the caregiver is injured on the premises. With No Place Like Home Care, all payroll, insurance, background screening, training, and backup coverage are managed by us. Families receive a vetted, trained, insured companion without the administrative and legal burden of direct employment.
