Live-In & 24-Hour Overnight Care

No Place Like Home Care provides live-in, 24-hour awake, and overnight non-medical home care for seniors and adults throughout Berks, Lehigh, Lancaster, and Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania.

Live-in care places one trained caregiver in the home on a flat daily rate, the most cost-effective option for continuous coverage when nighttime sleep is not significantly disrupted.

24-hour awake care uses rotating caregivers on sequential shifts for loved ones who require fully alert supervision throughout the night.

All care is nurse-led by Kelly Tyrrell, RN. Private pay and long-term care insurance accepted.

When Your Loved One Needs

Someone There Day & Night

Caregiver assisting senior woman walking at night during overnight home care - No Place Like Home Care

Some needs don't follow a schedule. Dementia doesn't pause at sunset. A fall risk doesn't lower itself while the family sleeps. The anxiety of leaving a loved one alone overnight, even for a few hours, is something many families know too well.

No Place Like Home Care provides continuous care options designed for exactly these situations: live-in care, 24-hour awake shift care, and overnight coverage.

Each is structured differently, priced differently, and designed for different levels of need. Understanding the difference is the first step to choosing the right one.

Our nurse-led team will walk through your loved one's situation during a free in-home assessment and help you determine which structure is the safest, most sustainable, and most cost-effective fit.

3 Levels Of Continuous Care.

One Decision Framework.

The right structure depends on how your loved one sleeps at night, what the home environment allows, and how complex their daily care needs are. Here is how each option works.

Overnight Care

Nighttime coverage for seniors who manage independently during the day but need a trained caregiver present through the night. Overnight care addresses fall risk after dark, sundowning symptoms, medication reminder schedules, and the anxiety of a loved one waking up alone and confused.

Overnight caregivers are present, awake, and responsive throughout the covered hours. This option works well alongside daytime support from family members or other scheduled care visits.

Best for seniors who are relatively independent during the day but unsafe or anxious alone at night.

Live-In Care

One dedicated caregiver lives in the home and provides ongoing support throughout the day, personal care, meal preparation, household support, companionship, medication reminders, and safety oversight. At night, the caregiver is entitled to an uninterrupted 8-hour rest period, during which they remain on the premises but are not actively working.

Live-in care is billed at a transparent flat daily rate rather than an accumulating hourly fee, making it significantly more affordable than rotating 24-hour shift coverage for families whose loved one sleeps reasonably well through the night.

No Place Like Home Care schedules two rotating live-in caregivers to cover the full week, a primary caregiver for the majority of days and a secondary relief caregiver for the remainder, ensuring consistency without burning out a single caregiver.

Live-In Care Rates — Flat Daily Rate

Weekday: $544/day

Weekend: $576/day

Holiday: $608/day

Important: Live-in care requires a private bedroom with a standard adult bed and adequate storage for the caregiver. If a private bedroom is not available, 24-hour awake shift care is the appropriate alternative.

Best for seniors who need consistent daily support and sleep through the night without frequent disruption. A private bedroom must be available for the caregiver.

24-Hour Awake Care

Two to three caregivers rotate through sequential shifts, typically 8 to 12 hours each, so that a fully alert caregiver is present and awake at every hour of the day and night. There is no sleep period built into this structure. Every shift is active coverage.

24-hour awake care is the appropriate choice when a loved one wakes frequently at night, has advanced dementia with nighttime wandering, is at high fall risk after dark, or has recently returned home from a hospital or skilled nursing facility with complex daily needs.

While the cost is higher than live-in care, 24-hour awake care provides the highest level of non-medical home coverage available, and for many families, it is the only structure that is genuinely safe.

Best for loved ones who wake frequently at night, wander, have high fall risk, or require fully alert supervision at all hours. Also ideal immediately following hospital discharge when needs are most complex.

IMPORTANT!

If your loved one wakes more than 1–2 times per night on a routine basis, live-in care is not the right structure.

A caregiver whose 8-hour rest period is repeatedly interrupted cannot provide safe, effective care, and employment law requires additional compensation in that scenario.

Our nurse-led team will assess nighttime patterns during your in-home assessment and recommend the right structure honestly.

Why Families Choose An Agency

Over a Private Hire Caregiver

Caregiver and family looking at photo album with senior client - No Place Like Home Care

Hiring a live-in caregiver independently, through a classified site or word of mouth, may appear less expensive at first. But independent hiring comes with significant responsibilities most families don't anticipate.

When you hire a live-in caregiver privately, the IRS classifies them as a household employee. You become legally responsible for withholding Social Security and Medicare taxes, paying federal unemployment taxes, and issuing a Form W-2 at the end of the year. You also carry all liability if the caregiver is injured in your home.

With No Place Like Home Care, every one of those responsibilities belongs to us, not you. We handle payroll taxes, worker's compensation insurance, background checks, training requirements, and backup coverage when the regular caregiver is unavailable. You get dependable, vetted, insured care. We handle everything else.

Frequently Asked Questions About Live-In & 24-Hour Care

What is the difference between live-in care and 24-hour awake care?

Live-in care places one caregiver in the home who works during the day and is legally entitled to an uninterrupted 8-hour sleep period at night. They remain on the premises but are not actively working during that rest period. 24-hour awake care uses two to three caregivers rotating through sequential shifts so that a fully alert caregiver is present and awake at every hour. The right choice depends on how your loved one sleeps at night and what level of nighttime supervision is truly needed.

What happens if my loved one wakes up frequently at night?

If a loved one routinely wakes more than one or two times per night, live-in care is not the right structure. A caregiver whose rest period is repeatedly interrupted cannot provide safe, effective care the following day, and labor law requires additional compensation in that scenario. For loved ones with frequent nighttime needs, advanced dementia, or high fall risk after dark, we recommend 24-hour awake shift care or dedicated overnight coverage. Our nurse-led assessment will evaluate nighttime patterns and recommend the right structure honestly.

How much does a live-in caregiver cost?

No Place Like Home Care's live-in care rates are $544 per day for weekday coverage, $576 per day for weekends, and $608 per day for holidays, billed as a flat daily rate per 24-hour period. This is significantly more cost-effective than round-the-clock hourly shift care for families whose loved one sleeps reasonably well at night. A one-time care coordination and onboarding fee of $375 also applies.

How many hours a day does a live-in caregiver actually work?

A live-in caregiver is physically on the premises for 24 hours but actively works 8 to 10 hours per day. Labor regulations require a designated daytime break of 4 to 5 hours of personal time and an uninterrupted 8-hour overnight rest period. The caregiver remains in the home throughout but is not on active duty during those periods.

What are the household requirements for a live-in caregiver?

The home must provide a private bedroom with a standard adult bed and adequate storage for the caregiver's personal belongings. The caregiver must also have regular access to a bathroom and a reliable food supply provided by the family. If a private bedroom cannot be provided, live-in care is not feasible and we would recommend 24-hour shift care instead.

Do live-in caregivers work 7 days a week?

No. A single caregiver cannot safely provide live-in care 7 days a week indefinitely. No Place Like Home Care schedules two rotating live-in caregivers, a primary caregiver who covers the majority of the week and a secondary relief caregiver for the remaining days. This protects both caregiver wellbeing and the consistency of care for your loved one.

What specific duties does a live-in or 24-hour caregiver perform?

Continuous care caregivers provide personal care assistance including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility support. They prepare daily meals, perform light housekeeping, provide transportation to appointments and errands, issue medication reminders, and offer companionship and social engagement. All duties are non-medical, live-in and 24-hour caregivers do not administer medications, perform wound care, or provide clinical services.

Does Medicare cover live-in or 24-hour home care?

No. Medicare does not cover live-in or 24-hour non-medical home care. Medicare's home health benefits are limited to short-term, medically necessary skilled care ordered by a physician. Long-term custodial care, including live-in and 24-hour coverage, must be funded through private pay or long-term care insurance. No Place Like Home Care accepts both.

Is it better to hire a private live-in caregiver or go through an agency?

Hiring privately may appear less expensive initially, but families who hire independent caregivers become their employer, responsible for payroll taxes, Social Security withholding, federal unemployment taxes, and Form W-2 issuance. They also carry liability if the caregiver is injured on the job. With No Place Like Home Care, all payroll, tax, insurance, and backup coverage responsibilities belong to us. You receive a vetted, trained, insured caregiver, without the administrative and legal burden of direct employment.

How do we get started with live-in or 24-hour care?

Call or text us at (610) 492-6632 or visit noplacelikehomepa.com to schedule. We will arrange a free in-home assessment with a Nurse Care Navigator who will evaluate your loved one's daily routines, nighttime patterns, home layout, and care needs. We can typically begin services within days of completing the assessment and onboarding process.
